Taking a later lunch than everyone else on the day-shift was the beauty of having some downtime, Nate mused. The choice of spots was a richer harvest, and he happily carried his tray to his favourite place by the railing that overlooked the pier. The fresh air was nice and the view was incredible; both worked to mitigate the mediocrity of the food that was served. Nate didn't mind. He loved being stationed here on Atlantis and with both his brother and his best friend off on missions with their respective teams, today also afforded him a nice modicum of peace and quiet.

Not that he minded the company of Tim and Jake, but he was very much his father's son when it came to being a bit of an introvert. He wasn't even through taking his first mouthful of food when his mind drifted to his plans of taking his book down to the northwest pier for the rest of the afternoon.

After several minutes of enduring her scrutiny, Nate gathered his tray with a bemused smile and headed to her table. He stood behind the empty spot across from her and grinned.

"Since you seem so intent on watching me, I suppose it only fair if I ask to join you. Save you a bit of trouble in trying not to look like you're staring," he teases gently.

Asha grinned at him, "I thought that the stories about you and your brother being psychic were a myth. By all means, sit down."

Anna could have never done this. She'd be dying of embarrassment now. "I wasn't staring," Asha states, "I was evaluating."

"Slightly exaggerated, possibly, but no. No myth," he said with a quiet chuckle, taking a seat and resuming lunch. "Mom still isn't entirely convinced that we don't have some sort of Force-sensitivity." He may or may not be joking about that.

"Evaluating, eh? Earned your way to a Generalship during your doctorate studies?" he continues to tease. "Well, then General. In what way can I assist you in this evaluation?"

[ooc: XD I think he's found a nickname for Asha ;)]

"Hmm, interesting," Asha commented as she looked at him, grinning slightly when he called her General. "However did you guess? It wasn't fitting those Generalship lessons in with teaching undergrads and researching for my thesis and taking classes, but I did it."

She took a sip of her fruit juice. "Just be normal. I'll let you know if and when I require specific data."

[ooc: she likes it!]

"Okay, normal it is, then," he concedes. "And you'll have to forgive me for asking which Lecroix twin you are. Haven't had a chance to spend any time with either of you ladies in order to safely forgo the asking."

He's charming, as ever, as he asks, watching her without seeming to watch her, as any soldier does with his surroundings by second nature.

"Asha," She answered matter of factly. "You and your brother were born here yes?"

Date: 2010-05-29 02:05 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
"Asha. Got it," he says with a grin and a nod. His brain unconsciously creates a mental file and labels it Asha as it begins storing his observations.

"We were, yes," he replied, poking at what remained of his lunch. "I was the second, Tim was the third. Torren was the first, though he chose to go back to New Athos to take Aunt Teyla's place as leader."

[ooc: taking a liberty here, since we've never said ;)]

"So what was it like growing up here?" Asha wanted to know, leaning forward in curiosity. "And do you mind answering questions?"

[ooc: s'ok :-D]

He thought about it for a moment or two, trying to find the words to formulate an answer. "It was unique," he said finally. "I can't compare it to anything else, not really. I mean, listening to the other students talking about home-life when I started at the Academy was like listening to mundane fairy-tales. Growing up here, we were pretty much 'home schooled' by just about everyone that worked here. Tim, Moira and Aaron gravitated towards Uncle Rodney's labs most of the time, though Tim also swung towards Uncle Evan, mum and dad, the way I did. The three of them had the run of the science labs, and I had run of military ops by the time Tim and I were five." He smiled at the memories of his youth.

"Aunt Teyla made sure that we didn't get too arrogant, though. While we were being taught to read and write and blow things up, she treated us as Athosian kids, so we got a different perspective on things. I loved our time on New Athos, and took to it a little quicker than Tim did, but I know he's thankful for it now."

He smiles shyly with a slight shake of his head as he realizes that he's been rambling. "And no, I don't mind answering questions; so long as I get to ask some of my own. Like what made you decide on Pegasus?"

Date: 2010-05-29 06:02 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
"Anna and I are linguists. It's what we're good at, and well the opportunity came up to come here and since we both had the gene and they were actually going to let us stick together instead of getting split up to different universities, we decided on here." Asha explained, after a moment. "And between that and listening to our well meaning-but-a little-crazy parents at dinner again debate where they thought Anna and I should go and who exactly they knew in the area that might make a good match and how teaching is such an honorable position and how eventually we'd give them grandchildren...well the military was quieter and it gave us a chance to think about stuff. Though now that I've seen the city, I don't think I'll want to leave."

He smiled knowingly. "That seems to be the common reaction to Atlantis. The longer you stay, the harder it is to leave."

Date: 2010-05-29 06:22 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha grinned, "Besides I like the people here, and learning Ancient is a pretty good challenge. So is learning your Aunt's way of fighting hand to hand. Anna's in love with the Ancient database and enjoys sparring with Dr. McKay." She blinked innocently at him. "So tell me, what's your favorite part about the city?"

Date: 2010-05-29 06:32 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
"Wait until they toss Wraith into the mix," he teased with a wink. "Derivative of Ancient, sure, but bastardized to within an inch of its life." He grinned. "I like the Bantos rods," he admitted, "Though I prefer sparring with Uncle Ronon."

Why, yes, very nearly everyone has the "aunt" or "uncle" honorific in Nate's world. Why do you ask?

Date: 2010-05-29 06:46 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha snickered, "Kind of like Sindarin then. I look forward to it." She nodded, "I'm used to Aikido and Jujitsu. The Bantos rods are an interesting way to practice." She tilted her head at him, "Maybe we could spar at one point. Bantos rods or just hand to hand, your pick."

Date: 2010-05-29 07:55 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
"I usually do my work-outs in the morning. You're welcome to come find me any time."

Date: 2010-05-29 08:19 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha smiled, "How early in the morning?" She thought after offering that he might not take her up on it, but now that he was, she was curious to try him out. On the sparring mat, that is. Nothing else, unless Anna signaled that she didn't mind or wasn't interested.

Date: 2010-05-29 08:34 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
"Daybreak, with Aunt Teyla," he replied.

Date: 2010-05-29 08:48 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha nodded, "I'll pop in sometime. I normally do some of my meditation then, but you've got me curious now..." She smirked slightly, "and you know what they say about curious academics, don't you?"

Date: 2010-05-29 08:52 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
"They get to be treated to breakfast," he joshed with a wink. "And we usually meditate prior to the ass-kicking, so you'll fit right in."

Date: 2010-05-29 09:02 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha grinned widely, "Exactly." She finished her drink, and smiled at him. "So what do you for fun on a floating city, Lt. Sheppard?"

Date: 2010-05-29 10:16 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
"Going to the Tendol feasts, playing pranks on our parents, camping and surfing off the mainland, reading whatever I can get my hands on, and shooting the occasional golf ball off the pier." He would have added supply runs for his mom, in her galaxy, but he isn't sure how classified all that is still, so he says nothing. He does add, however, "Also, talking to beautiful linguists."

Date: 2010-05-30 02:27 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha smiled, "What do you like to read?" The golf ball thing sounded like fun - she'd have to try that sometime. Or get him to show her. The beautiful linguists remark had her blush slightly, she supposed it was part of the famous Sheppard charm.

Date: 2010-05-30 03:00 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
He smiled at the slight blush, and shrugs at her question. "I'll try anything once. I'm not so much into the comics, like my dad and Tim, but I do read'em sometimes. More into graphic novels than comics. But otherwise I do classic lit, mostly. Some fantasy, and definitely science fiction. I found a couple of Ancient manuscripts in the database that were phenomenal."

Date: 2010-05-30 03:31 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha grinned, "I have a good collection of classics and scifi that I smuggled with me. If you want to look at them to see if you've not read any of them. " Her eyes lit up at the thought of Ancient manuscripts. "I'll even trade a few for those manuscripts you mentioned."

Date: 2010-05-30 03:39 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lt-nate.livejournal.com
"Sure, and you're welcome to come check out my library and pilfer at will." He smiled, and after a moment or two it turned devious. "As for the Ancient manuscripts, they're yours if you join me for lunch every day this week, same time and place as today," he added, gesturing over his shoulder at his usual spot.

Date: 2010-05-30 03:58 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] drlacroix2.livejournal.com
Asha shot him an amused look, "I think that can be arranged." She sat back, "So Lieutenant, did you have any plans after lunch?"
